John Skolle Painting, "The Monster"

This oil painting on board is by John Skolle (German American,1903-1988), whose art is in the collections of Yale University and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His work has been exhibited in various museums, including the Museum of Modern Art. Surveying his colorful paintings, you would see that Skolle was an artist who, like many modern painters, combined elements of abstract painting and landscape painting. In this particular work, "The Monster," what could be a beach scene is transformed into stylized forms with a tree-like form at the foreground, suggesting a creature in its twisted limbs.

The board is framed in a silver-painted wood frame. It is signed and titled by the artist on the reverse side.

Frame: 36 3/4" width, 27 1/2" height, 1 3/4" depth.
